LUZAPEAK PIG : alfalfa fiber for post-weaning piglet welfare
To prevent caudophagy on pig farms after the weaning period, various approaches are possible, ranging from tail docking to the use of repellents and environmental enrichment. However, it should be noted that tail docking, although sometimes effective, is currently raising questions and concerns within society.
- The proposed solution is a sustainable fiber source to reduce aggression, Luzapeak. Offered in the form of dehydrated destructured alfalfa bales (20 kg), this solution has demonstrated its effectiveness on livestock farms and at Cooperl's experimental farm. To optimize the concept, it was necessary to work with Coquelin to develop a specific distribution rack, the challenge being to provide access to the bale without generating frustration or excessive consumption. The rack can be easily fixed to any type of grating to prevent it from being knocked over or moved.
- The average life of a ball is 8 weeks for 20 piglets, but it can be used as a curative measure as soon as the first signs of cannibalism appear.
- LUZAPEAK PIG won an Innov'SPACE award at SPACE 2023.
